Hot Grammar

Image

You can bet that this Grandmother knew her grammar.

No, this is not about grandmothers that are sexually attractive. Please….

This is about grammatical errors that are common and irritate the heck out of your former English teachers. Or any of the rest of us who read what you write – especially your Facebook posts. Yes, I mean you.

Your/ You’re –

This seems to be an incredibly common problem.

What is the difference –?

Your – I have your gloves.  Your – the gloves belonging to you.

You’re – You’re going to the movies, right? “You’re” is a contraction of the two words, “you” and “are”.

If you are not sure which to use, say the sentence with the words “you are” in it. It if makes sense with “you are” then you can use “you’re”. Using the examples above, you would not say “I have you are gloves.” So the answer is I have your gloves. But you would say “You are going to the movies.” So in that instance you can use “you’re”.

Its/It’s

It is that contraction problem again. When you see an apostrophe, think two words not one. Unless of course it is there to show procession (Susie’s duck).

What is the difference –?

Its – The dog licked its tail. (Keep it clean, people!)

It’s – It’s my gun. It’s is a contraction of the words “it” and “is”.

If you are not sure which to use, say the sentence with the words “it is” in it. It if makes sense with “it is” then you can use “it’s”. As in the example above, it would not be right to say “The dog licked it is tail.”

Their/there/they’re

Okay, as you may notice, these three problem areas are sets of words that sound alike but have different meanings. Remember, they are called homophones.

What is the difference –?

Their – Their hands met when they both tried to grab the falling glass. “Their” shows possession or ownership. The hands belong to people (or zombies, whatever)

There – There is a black squirrel in the yard. “There” is used to call attention to something.

They’re – They’re going to go see the new vampire movie.  “They’re” means “they are”

On this one, see if you are talking about more than one person and something that they possess, in that case, it is “their”. If you can replace the word with “they are” then the answer should be “they’re.”

OMG! She put a test in here!

Fill in the blank

“Oh, (it’s/its) you again! I thought I told you that there are not kumquats here and you should go home to (your/you’re) own house. (Your/You’re) driving me crazy. “

“(There/their/They’re) , (there/their/they’re), (its/it’s) not so bad, man. I just love kumquats and I search for them everywhere I go.”

“If you want kumquats, go over (there/their/they’re) to the Kent’s. (There/Their/They’re) kumquats are the best in the county. (There/Their/They’re) kumquats win the county fair ribbon every year. (Their/There/They’re) the kumquat champions.”

“Where is (there/their) farm?”

“Why, it is over (there/their). (Its/It’s) the one painted yellow.”

“Thank you for (your/you’re) kindness! I will go over (there/their) right away. I hope (there/their/they’re) nice people. ”

Hot Cocktails

(You have probably caught on by now that I am doing a 31 day challenge from BlogHer. If you haven’t then please check out the post for the past 20 days and you will see the theme of “hot”. I am beginning to wonder why I am doing this but I am sure it is making me a better person. Okay, I don’t believe that either but I am sticking to this challenge. )

(I do apologize for yesterday’s post. I was not feeling that great – RETURN OF THE GIANT SINUS INFECTION – and I started writing too late in the day. To be honest, I posted and then got into bed. So, I am sorry I took an easy way out yesterday. I will try very hard not to do it again. )

Welcome to my world of “hot”. Before I start on some fascinating aspect of something “hot”, I have a comment. I don’t think that I have looked up one” hot” thing that hasn’t had a musical band named after it. Really. It seems strange to me but I suppose that you would want people to think that you were a hot band and how better to get that across than to have the word “hot” in your band name.

But now I have digressed for three paragraphs in a row and I should get to my topic for the day. Are you ready?

Hot cocktails.

Okay, it is summer and I am not really about to have a hot toddy but I wanted to take a picture as illustration. I could even find a scarf to try and fool you into thinking it was winter.

I have never had a hot cocktail. I should have had one since I am from the Midwest (land of snow and ice) but I really don’t think I have.  That sounds odd even to me but that is the way it goes.

There are two cocktails that come to mind when I think of hot cocktails. The first is hot buttered rum. All can think of is those buttered rum lifesavers. Now, I actually like those but I know that for most people they are the lifesavers best left behind. I looked up how to make hot buttered rum and here is a recipe:

Ingredients –

1 small slice of butter

1 tsp. brown sugar

Optional spices to taste – ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, allspice

Vanilla extract

2 oz. dark rum

Hot water

Preparation –

Place the butter, sugar, and spices at the bottom of an Irish coffee glass or mug

Mix well

Pour in the rum and hot water

Stir

I know it sounds stupid but I really didn’t think that there would be butter in this drink. Live and learn. I did find it humorous that they say that this drink is a “delight around a fall campfire”. And for you romantics, it also says that you can put the drink together and then plunge a red hot poker in the glass. Hmmm. I don’t think I will try that method. That screaks of being done after too many drinks. And I don’t see it working out well.

The second drink is the hot toddy or hot totty. It seems to me that when I was in college that someone gave their version of a hot toddy to one of the dance majors when she felt sick and wanted to feel better before her final the next morning. Since it was a bunch of 19 year olds doing this, as you can guess, it did not work out well. I think that she forgot about her cold as she was “hugging the porcelain goddess” all night. She thought those toddies tasted pretty good until they didn’t.

So here is the recipe for the Hot Toddy.

Ingredients-

1 oz. brandy, whiskey or rum

1 tablespoon honey

¼ lemon

1 cup hot water

1 tea bag

Preparation-

Coat the bottom of a mug or Irish coffee glass with honey

Add the liquor and the juice of the lemon

On the side heat the water and put in the tea bag to make hot tea

Pour the steaming tea into the glass and stir

I know it is my warped way of thinking but what cracks me up right now is that they have videos on how to make these drinks. I think the instructions are pretty clear and easy, don’t you? Do you need a video to show you how?  People do love their video cameras, don’t they?

Do you drink hot cocktails? What is your favorite?

Hot Diggity Dog!

(This month, I am participating in the BlogHer  August challenge to keep to the theme of “hot”)

It seem that singing about Hot Dog! (the expression) was very popular.  Here are three examples.

So, which is your favorite?  I have to admit I am a bit partial to old Perry Como.  If you are interested, you can get it as a ring tone for your phone…

Thanks for reading!  (Okay, maybe today it should be – Thanks for watching!)

Hot Air Balloons

(On to Day 18 of the BlogHer challenge to post for 31 days with the prompt “hot”)

Years ago, my sister took my parents to a hot air balloon event.  She and my Dad went for a ride.  It was a wonderful ride but my sister did not think about the landing.  Landings in hot air balloons are not smooth, soft events.  My Dad was 80 at the time.  It was a landing none of them will ever forget. (He was a bit shook up but fine.)

A Little Science

(Today is August 17 which means that the August BlogHer challenge to post 31 days on the topic of “hot” is slowly progressing.)

Today’s “hot” post is a bit of a quick but fascinating scientific information.  (Bet you didn’t expect that!)

Wow! Look it is a hand!

Did you know that sometimes you can  touch something extremely hot and yet it will seem cold for a quick second?  If you are into pain, you can test this out.  If you are, however, a reasonable person, you will just believe what I am going to tell you.

Your hands have sensory receptors in them.  These receptors are specialized.  There are receptors that just feel hot and others that just feel cold.  When a receptor is stimulated, it sends a message to the brain.  It seems that the cold receptors and the hot receptors closely packed in small groups throughout your hands.

So let’s say that you accidentally touch a hot stove.  The closely packed receptors are very stimulated by the heat.  Sometimes, they are so stimulated that they send the wrong information to the brain.  The correction of the sensation can take anywhere from a split second to a few seconds.

So now you know something new.
