Circling the Sun by Paula McLain

West With the Night was the autobiography of Beryl Markham

The autobiography of Beryl Markham

Hello Fellow Readers!

Years ago I was in a book club and we read West with the Night by Beryl Markham.  It was a fabulous biography about a woman who grew up and lived in Africa.  It was the book that made me think that women who made their way through life as pioneers and adventurers were probably not the women that you wanted to befriend but they certainly had an interesting view of the world.

Beryl Markham

Beryl Markham

Circling the Sun by Paula McLain is the Beryl Markham story from a historical fiction perspective.  The story begins when Beryl is a young girl and her mother leaves with her brother to go back to England because she did not like living in Africa.  Beryl is left with her father and she is free to run around their property.  On the face of it, she leads a great life for a child – free to run and learn on her own.  In reality it probably needed to change so that she could fit into society.  By the time that her father tries to reign her in, it was too late.  Beryl did not really ever learn to fit into society or even understand it.  She did what she wanted to do most of the time.  This did include becoming the first female licensed horse trainer in Africa and becoming the first female licensed pilot.  She was also the first woman to fly solo (east to west) from England to North America non-stop.

Money problems did plague Beryl throughout  her life and she found herself destitute  at various points.  Her first marriage at 16 was so that she could stay in Kenya and that relationship took its toll on her due to her husband’s drinking issues.  Life was not easy for Beryl but she sometimes did not make it easy on herself.  She was friends with Karen Blixen, who was the author of Out of Africa (written under the pen name of Isak Dinesen), but didn’t hesitate to chase after the man Karen Blixen loved.

It is a lovely tale of an interesting life.

Circling the Sun

Will be published July 28.

Paula McLain did not shy away from the questions in Beryl Markham’s life.  One of the main questions was whether or not she actually wrote West With the Night. There are some that feel that her third husband, Raoul Schumacher, who was a Hollywood ghost writer actually authored the book.  Interestingly, the book did not sell well when first released.  It was re-issued years later and became a best seller.  This allowed Beryl, who was 80 at the time, to live comfortably for the rest of her life.

Circling the Sun will be release July 28th and should be a great book for those lazy hot days of August.

Thanks for reading!

Happy 4th of July!

I hope that you have a lovely holiday weekend!  Are you going to be busy with family or can you hide away for a bit of reading this weekend?  I am hoping for a little time reading to try and clear the cobwebs from my mind.  Yes, that is what it does for me.  It occupies my mind and lets all the other noise settle itself out.

I am not sure what will be this weekend’s pick but don’t worry, I will let you know soon.  I don’t think it will be a mystery – I think I need a popcorn book to take all my cares away. If you have a great suggestion, let me know.

Thanks for reading!

More Mysteries – the Honest Armond Gamache

Author Louise Penny

Author Louise Penny

I do read a variety of genres but part of my heart is always drawn to mysteries.  I am especially drawn to mysteries that are part of a series.  Somehow, if I like the detective, I love reading more about them.

It all started with Agatha Christie.  Well, probably really with the Trixie Beldon books of my youth.  There is something about being able to follow a character and get to know them and all the quirks that are developed over time.  In recent years, I have read the books by Donna Leon with Commisario Guido Brunetti – there are 24 books in that series.  I have also read the Sue Grafton A-X (so far) books.

I have found a new author and I think she is wonderful.  The author is Louise Penny.  The 11th book in her series with Chief Inspector Armond Gamache will be out in August.  I have read books 1-4 and am trying not to read them too fast.

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ss&ref=ss_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=httpcecoocom-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B001OLRMZA&asins=B001OLRMZA&linkId=BID6R3ALY7CLPVRV&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true

So far, the books are connected to the small hidden away town of Three Pines in Quebec, Canada.  The books actually have a double bonus in that many of the characters are in each book.  As the books progress, you get to know the characters better and more  characters are added in each story.  The books are in the same vein of mystery as Agatha Christie in that they are not bloody but more psychological.  We also find as time goes by that the Chief Inspector has trouble at work with his superiors due to his good nature. His belief in people at times bothers his staff.

In the first book  (Still Life) there is a murder in the small town and everyone is wondering who could have committed the murder when they all know each other so well.  The Chief Inspector set up an outpost in the town to track down the killer. During the course of the investigation they get to know some of the towns people. We also get to know the Chief Inspector’s team and the interpersonal problems with the team members. They do find the killer but not before the murderer almost kills again.

I would highly recommend the Louise Penny mysteries.  In fact, I am not sure that I will make it through the weekend without picking up the fifth book in the series and starting it.  Just thinking about them has whet my appetite to read more about the Chief Inspector.

Thanks for reading!

I just found these collections on Amazon.  It is much less expensive to buy the group rather than the individual books.  I don’t remember how I happened to read the first book in the series but I know that I read 2-4 because one day I received an offer from Amazon for the books at a reduced price of $2.99 each.  (I wish I had bought more!)  Make sure you are on the mailing list with Amazon to get their emails with book specials.

Also remember that you can go and look for free Kindle books on Amazon just type in “free books for Kindle” in the search box at the top of the page.  If you need the Kindle app, please click on the link below.

Sand gripping beach mysteries

woman on bech reading

So caught up reading that she feels she is in the book.

Much like last week, I find that I am behind in telling you about a series of mysteries.  Unlike last week, these are not cozy mysteries.  Last year, I reviewed the second book in this series, The Red Hot Fix by T. E. Woods.  In that review, said that I would be interested in reading the next book in the series if there was one.

Sometimes the beach is too far and you just have to sit outside

Sometimes the beach is too far and you just have to sit outside

There are now four books in the series. The books feature Mort Grant, who is the chief of detectives in Seattle.  I have still not read the first book, The Fixer.  When I started with the second book, The Red Hot Fix, I could figure out what happened in the first book.  If you can, starting with the first book would be the best idea.  I do think that the books have improved with each subsequent book.

In the third book, The Unforgivable Fix, we find out more about Mort Grant’s daughter.  At the end of The Red Hot Fix, we learned that she was living with a drug kingpin.  Mort had tried to save his daughter but she was not interested in being saved.  In this book, she comes back to him because she is in a dangerous situation.  He knows that he needs to hide her so he turns to his friend “the Fixer”.  Taking advantage of his relationship with “the Fixer” could cost Mort what he thinks he really wants and could damage their relationship.

There is something about being absorbed in a book and the scenery all at the same time.

The fourth book in the series, Fixed in Blood, will be released on June 16.  In the continuing story, we find that Mort has not forgiven “the Fixer” for his loss.  But Mort has a killer to find. There is someone creating snuff films with young ladies and they are very careful to avoid detection.

At the same time, “the Fixer” who has been in retirement, feels compelled to investigate the disappearance of a client.  When she and Mort find they are on the same trail, they need to decide if their relationship can be mended.

I do think each book has been better than the last. There is merit to reading all of them in sequence has merit. First of all, you get to see the whole story which will help understand the characters. Then also, you will be able to like the series more and more with each book.

I hope your summer reading is going well. I am not sure if we have had more days to read out in the sun or under a blanket yet. But wherever you are, enjoy a book!

Thanks for reading!

PS.  For your convenience, you can click on the slides to go to Amazon to by the Kindle version of the books. Cozy Mysteries by Marty Wingate

Dear Fellow Reader,

As you may know if you follow this blog, I seem to go in reading spurts. As can happen sometimes, I read so many books that I forget to tell you about some of them.

I seem to be in that position. I read a book a few months ago and never reviewed it. In a way, this is good news for those of you who like to read series. It seems that since I waited there is one more book with two others on the way.

So let’s start with the author. The author’s name is Marty Wingate. She is  an avid gardener from the Seattle area. She had speaks on gardening  and leads tours in Europe. She has several gardening books along with three cozy mysteries. You can find out more about her either on her web site  or her Amazon author page .

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ss&ref=ss_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=httpcecoocom-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00GL3Q176&asins=B00GL3Q176&linkId=OUNNEGRAFQI2M4KZ&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true

She has two series of cozy mysteries. The first series is the Potting Shed Mystery series. This series starts with the book,  The Garden Plot and it is followed by The Red Book of Primrose House. Now, I have not read The Garden Plot. I started with The Red Book of Primrose House. I think that you would have more background if you started with The Garden Plot but I will say that you don’t have to have that background to figure out what is going on in the story. For you purists,  I would start with The Garden Plot. Besides, you will have more in the series to read that way!  The main character is Pru Parke. Pru is from Texas. Pru’s beloved dead mother came from England and without any relatives in the United States, Pru had a feeling  that she should live in England. She went to school for horticulture and longs to work as a head gardener in England.

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ss&ref=ss_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=httpcecoocom-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00KAFXBHE&asins=B00KAFXBHE&linkId=EYWFQIXVUSLGBW3D&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true

Now, in case you think that because you could care less about gardening that you should skip these books, I would say that I am not particularly a gardener (or at all) and I found the books interesting. Yes, there is information about gardens but not so much that you would get lost or bored. It may be that if you were a gardener that you would appreciate parts more than I did but I would not let the gardening aspect throw you off.

Pru is not an intentional sleuth. She does not go looking for bodies nor does she know much about how to solve a crime. Pru does find a love interest in the books and as can be part of a cozy mystery, she may meet him while working out the “who done it.”

The third book in the series, Between a Rock and a Hard Place will be released August 4, 2015. In this book, Pru contemplates marriage while working at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. She is on a short term assignment to authenticate a journal. Her reception at the Royal Botanic Garden is not exactly what she would have expected.

The second series from Ms. Wingate are the Birds of a Feather mysteries. The first book of this series was released this week. This second series also takes place  in England. The first book, The Rhyme of the Magpie, introduces us to Julia Lanchester. Julia’s father is a famous ornithologist (he studies birds). When her father disappears, Julia feels the need to try and find him if only to clear his name of a murder.  I see that there is a second book in the series that will be released on December 1, 2015.

The books are available on the Kindle from Amazon for $2.99. If you don’t have the Kindle app on your phone, tablet, or desktop; you can download it by clicking on the picture below.

I think you will enjoy these cozy mysteries.

Thanks for reading!

P.S. Yes, I am an Amazon Affiliate.  In the realm of things that can happen, I can make money from you buying the books by clicking on the pictures of the books in this post.  Has it happened yet? No.  So, please don’t think I review books to make money.  If that were the case, I would have starved.  I just put them there mostly  for your convenience.
